The city of Bottineau, the county seat of Bottineau County, North Dakota, was founded in 1883 as Oak Creek, a customs station and overnight stage stop. In 1884, the town’s name was changed in honor of Pierre Bottineau, a hunter, trapper and land speculator. The original town site was a mile and a half north of its current location, having moved south in 1887 to meet the Great Northern Railway. Bottineau is just south of the Canadian border, west of Dunseith, north of Gardena and Omemee, and southeast of Souris.
