Wilson, North Carolina is the county seat of Wilson County. Originally named Toisnot, the community grew up around Toisnot Primitive Baptist Church in the early 17th century.In 1836, the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad Co. began work on a railroad line which would connect Wilmington to Weldon. By 1840, Tiosnot had rail service going north as well as south. It was known as "The World's Greatest Tobacco Market" when tobacco became a desired commodity, though it has since diversified its commerce. The North Carolina General Assembly chartered the town in 1849 and named it Wilson in honor of a North Carolina politician who was a general in the Army. He died of yellow fever in 1847 while fighting the Mexican-American War.
