Tryon, North Carolina is located in Polk County in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town was named in honor of Governor William Tryon, who was governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771. In particular, the honor was bestowed upon him due to his negotiation of a treaty with the Cherokee during the bloodiest part of the French and Indian War. The land which is now the town of Tryon was part of the Cherokee nation. The first Europeans settled in the area in the 1730s after a 1730 treaty resulted in peaceful relations between the trappers, settlers, and Cherokee. That peace was interrupted by the French and Indian War and resulted in Indian raids and a blockhouse being built in town to avert violence. The railroad came through the town in 1877, and by the 1890s, there were six railroad stops a day in Tryon.
