Durham, North Carolina is the seat of Durham County and is also part of Wake and Orange Counties. It comprises one-third of the Research Triangle, along with Raleigh and Chapel Hill. In the middle of the 18th century, colonists from England, Scotland, and Ireland settled in the area on land which was granted to John Carteret, the Earl of Granville. Originally called Durham Station, it was named in honor of the man who owned the land on which the train station was located, Bartlett Durham.
