Carlsbad, New Mexico is the county seat of Eddy County. The city sits on both banks of the Pecos River. In the late 1800s, immigrants from England, France, Italy, and Switzerland moved to what was then called the settlement of Eddy. It was so-named in honor of Charles Eddy, who was one of the owners of the Eddy-Bissell Livestock Company, which was one of the first and the largest businesses in town at the time. As local mineral springs were developed and became successful, the name of the town was changed to Carlsbad for the famed spa in Carlsbad Bohemia. In 1891, the railroad from Pecos was finished, and special excursion trips brought eastern tourists to the area, which enhanced the local economy. In 1901, the underground limestone cave named Carlsbad Caverns was rediscovered by cowboys brought even more visitors. The caverns were designated a national monument in 1923 and part of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park in 1930.
