The town of Middleton, New Hampshire  is situated in Strafford County. It was named in honor of Sir Charles Middleton, 1st Baron Barham who headed up the convoy service between the colonies and Barbados. It was settled in 1774 by settlers who came from Somersworth, Lee and Rochester. In 1796, many of the Quaker families, let by the town auditor, Nicholas Austin, left New Hampshire for more peaceful lands. The ended up settling in Austin, Quebec, which was named for their leader. The soil in Middleton was rocky and difficult to farm, but the people there cider and maple syrup. The town was incorporated in March 05 1778, and in December of 1794, the town of Brookfield was severed from Middleton.
