In 1730, Captain Peter Powers hiked into West Dunstable Territory and start working on building a log cabin for himself, his wife Anna, and their two baby boys. In 1731, his little family joined him in what would soon be called Hollis, and they became the first family of settlers there. In 1746, the Colonial Governor of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth, chartered the land and founded the government of the town. Immediately, Hollis and Dunstable (which is now known as Nashua) began a border dispute which continued until 1763 when the General Court decided in favor of Hollis. By the time it was chartered, the town had grown to forty-three families., and by the time of the Revolutionary War, there were 280 families in Hollis. Mere hours after the Shot Heard 'Round the World, the town of Hollis heard the news, and nearly every man and boy old enough to carry a gun, 125 in all, joined the fight, and most of the handful of tories who lived in town were exiled at least for the duration of the war, and some never came back. By the end of the war, 22 Hollis men died.
