Home to several corporations and universities today, the first Europeans came to the area that is now Irvine, California in 1769, as a part of an expedition by the Spanish explorer, Gaspar de Portolà. This was followed by the establishment of forts, missions, and ranch cattle. James Irvine acquired the property in 1864 and 1878, his son inherited it in 1886. When the railroad came through, it named its station after Irvine’s son, Myford, but it was renamed irvine in 1914.
