The small mountain town of Franklin is in Franklin Township in Macon County, North Carolina and is its county seat. It is also inside the Nantahala National Forest. It was named in honor of Jesse Franklin, one of the state commissioners who surveyed and then organized the town in 1820. He served as a North Carolina senator as well as the twentieth governor of the state of North Carolina. It was formally incorporated in 1844.
