The town of Davidson, North Carolina in situated in Mecklenburg County. It was founded in 1837 when Presbyterian Davidson College was established. The college was named in honor of Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, a Revolutionary War veteran whose son donated the land upon which the college sits; the town was named after the college. The town government was the college, which even ran the police department. While there were a few businesses which leased land from the college, the area was made up mostly of small farms and plantations. Davidson remained rural for the rest of the 19th century. In 1879, the town was incorporated as Davidson College. The name was changed to just Davidson in 1891.
