The town of Cornelis, North Carolina, is located in Mecklenburg County. nIt was founded in 1893 and incorporated in 1905. The town was founded due to a dispute over the weighing of cotton. In the 1890s, there were two competing and successful cotton companies in Davidson, and one of them believed that the town of Davidson should have an official town cotton weigher, and the other did not. An election was held, and the town appointed a weigher. When that happened, the opposing company decided to move its base of operations south of the town limits. Shortly after the relocation, the company decided that a cotton mill was needed, and a man named Joseph Cornelius came up with the money to acquire one. It was Mr. Cornelius after whom the town was named.
