Charlotte, North Carolina is the county seat of Mecklenburg County. It was named in honor of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the queen consort of King George III just before the founding of the city, which is how the city ended up with the nickname “The Queen City.” It is also called the “hornet’s Nest,” after General Cornwallis, during the Revolution, occupied the city but was driven out by residents which caused him to write that Charlotte was “a hornet’s nest of rebellion”
