Situated in Orange and Durham Counties, the town of Chapel Hill makes up one leg of North Carolina’s Research Triangle, along with the cities of Raleigh and Durham. It was first settled by Wiliam Barbee, from Middlesex County, Virginia, who held a land grant of 585 acres, part of which was what is now Chapel Hill. The town center is located at the top of a hill where a small Anglican chapel was built in 1752. In 1819, the town was founded in order to house the University of North Carolina.
