Named in honor of the pioneer, explorer, and statesman Daniel Boone, the town of Boone, North Carolina is the county seat of Watauga County. Appalachian State University is located in Boone. Every summer since 1952, an outdoor amphitheater has been the location for the drama "Horn in the West" a re-enactment of the settlement of the town during the American Revolution. Daniel Boone's nephews, Jonathan and Jesse, founded the first church in town. The East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad had a narrow gauge which went through town. It served Boone until 1940, when the Flood of 1940 wiped out the tracks, and the company decided not to replace them.
