Beaufort, North Carolina is the county seat of Carteret County. The famous pirate Blackbeard ran the Queen Anne's Revenge, his flag ship, aground in what today is called Beaufort Inlet in the summer of 1718. Thousands of artifacts found in the wreckage are currently in local museums.
