The county seat of Buncombe County, North Carolina, Asheville today was once land which belonged to the Cherokee Nation. Hernando de Soto, the Spanish explorer, arrived in the area in 1540, along with the first Europeans in the area. The first settlers to the area were the family of Colonel Sam Davidson in 1784, but he was soon killed by a band of Cherokee Indians, and his family fled. Months later, his extended family returned to the area and re-settled it, and from there grew the town.
