The town of Apex, North Carolina is situated in Wake County. It was the site of a railroad station which was chartered in 1869. This station and the prospect of commercial opportunities caused the first settlers to move into what would become the town. Apex was incorporated in 1873 and named due to the fact that it is the highest point on the Chatham Railroad between Richmond, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida. The dense forest in town was turned into successful tobacco farmland. By 1900, there were 349 people living in town. In 1905, fire devoured numerous commercial buildings in town, and in 1911, almost all of the downtown business district burned to the ground. After the second fire, the town was rebuilt with brick buildings. Apex is now part of what is known as Research Triangle Park, which offers jobs in the technology industry.
