Watertown, New York is the county seat of Jefferson County, where it is situated. It is named because of the numerous falls located on the nearby Black River which were the basis for the city's development into a manufacturing center. In 1800, it was settled by pioneers from New Hampshire who were drawn to settle there because of the river. In 1805, they established Watertown's Public Square, which is still in use today as an open mall. It was incorporated as a village in 1816 and as a city in 1869.
