Rochester, New York, is the county seat of Monroe County. The native Iroquois, who had allied with the British in the American Revolutionary War, were ousted from the area, which was then settled by the Americans. In 1803, Col. Nathaniel Rochester and two of his friends, who had also fought in the War, came from Hagerstown, Maryland and bought 100 acres of land there and laid out the town, marking the beginnings of Rochester.
