Oneonta, New York is in Otsego County. Nicknamed the City of the Hills, Oneonta was settled by ethnic Palatine German and Dutch settlers who began to arrive in the 1770s after leaving the Hudson and eastern Mohawk valleys. One of those settlers, Henry Scramling, had been given a grant of 1,000 acres. He moved from German Flatts in 1773. He left the area during the American Revolutionary War and returned once it was over with his two brothers and two brothers-in-law. All of them established their own farms. The hamlet was developed in 1800 and was known as Milfordville, and in 1830, the town of Oneonta was formed. It was incorporated as a town within the village in 1848 and as a city in 1908.
