Evanston, Wyoming is the county seat of Uinta County. It was named in honor of Union Pacific Railroad surveyor James E. Evans upon its founding during the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad, during which the founders expected Evanston to be the end of the line. Unfortunately for them, the railroad managers decided to extend the line by twelve miles, making the town of Wasatch the end of the line. In less than a week, almost ever person living in Evanston migrated to Wasatch. Shortly thereafter, however, the railroad’s headquarters were moved back to Evanston, which guaranteed its existence as a town.
