Originally established as the Town of Fairfax in 1759, what is now known as Culpeper, Virginia is the only incorporated town in Culpeper County. The town was surveyed by George Washington and the plan was for it to be ten blocks, all of which are now the center of the downtown area. In 1795, the town’s first post office was established and called Culpeper Court House. There was already a Fairfax Court House post office as well as a Fairfax Station post office, which caused a lot of confusion, and so in 1869, the Virginia Assembly renamed the town Culpeper. During the Civil War, the town, which was at a crossroads which was used by both the Union and Confederate Armies, was occupied, at different times, by each of those entities. It is now a bedroom community for both Washington, D.C. and northern Virginia.
