The county seat of Hidalgo County, Texas is the city of Edinburg. It was established by John Closner, Argyle McAllen, William Briggs, Dennis Chapin, and Plutarco de la Viña in 1908. The town was originally named Chapin after one of the developers. While there is a local myth about Edinburg becoming the county seat due to a nighttime caper where the records were removed from the old seat to Edinburg, the actual story is that the original county courthouse in the former county seat of Hidalgo was constantly flooding due to the nearby Rio Grande. In 1911, Dennis Chapin was involved in the killing of a man in San Antonio, and the town’s name was changed to honor a local businessman who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was incorporated in 1919.
