The city of Franklin, Tennessee is the seat of Williamson County. It was founded in 1799 by Tennessee State Senator Abram Maury, Jr. who named it in honor of Benjamin Franklin. During the Civil War, in November of 1864, the Battle of Franklin, one of the bloodiest battles of the entire war, took place in the city. As a result, there were nearly 10,000 casualties. Field hospitals were needed, and 44 buildings were converted for that purpose. The Union army occupied Franklin for close to three years.
