The city of Kingston, New York, is the county seat of Ulster County. In 1614, the Dutch established a trading post nearby, where the Rondout Creek and Hudson River meet. It was incorporated by patent in 1667 and was recognized as a town in 1702. In 1777, Kingston was named the first capital of New York just after the New York constitution was written and while New York City was occupied by British troops, and on October 16, 1777, the city was burned by the occupying army. To this day, Kingston celebrates that burning with a re-enactment every other year, beginning at the Rondout. Kingston was incorporated as a village in 1805.
