Trenton, New Jersey, is the capital of the state and the county seat of Mercer County. It was settled by the Quakers in 1679 after fleeing their persecution in England. It was named Trent-towne in 1719 in honor of William Trent, who was one of the major landholders. Some time later, that was adjusted to Trenton. It served as the capital of the United States during the winter of 1784 when it was decided that the capital should be south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
