The town of Brookline, New Hampshire is in Hillsborough County. Brookline started its life as part of Dunstable, Massachusetts but was settled as West Hollis, New Hampshire. In 1769, it was granted as the town of Raby, which was the name of Governor John Wentworth's cousin, the 4th Earl of Steafford and Baron of Raby Castle. In 1798, the name of the town was changed to Brookline in honor of Brookline, Massachusetts, the home town of one of the leading citizens. In 1859, the town was home to 718 residents, eight sawmills, one gristmill, and one blind shop. The Boston and Maine Railroad led to Brookline in 1892, but that was short-lived, and the railroad station was converted into a private home.
