Natchez, Mississippi, the county seat of Adams County, was founded by French colonists in 1716, making it one of the oldest European settlements in the region. It is named after the Natchez Indians. It was the site of the Natchez War, which began in the winter of 1729. The Natchez Massacre, part of that war, saw the Natchez kill at least 240 settlers after a French commandant demanded land from their village for his own plantation. The war went on until 1731.
