Newton, the county seat of Harvey County in Kansas, was founded in 1871 when the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway extended their main line from Emporia. It was named in honor of the city of Newton, Massachusetts, which was the hometown of several stockholders in the railroad. Since that same year, it has been called “the wickedest city in the west,” due to a gunfight which killed eight men.
