Augusta, which is formally known as Augusta-Richmond County, was founded by a group led by James Oglethrorpe, who had founded Savannah just two years earlier. A member of the expedition, Noble Jones, created a settlement in order to defend against the French and the Spanish. Oglethorpe named the settlement after Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, the princess of Wales, who was the mother of King George III of Britain.
