Albany, New York is the state capital and the seat of Albany County. Europeans founded a settlement in 1614, and it officially became a city in 1686. It was more than a century later, in 1797, that it became the state capital. Though it was founded as Dutch trading posts, the British took possession of it in 1664 and named it after the Duke of Albany, the future King of England, King James II, and King James VII of Scotland.
