Grant County, New Mexico has as its county seat the town of Silver City. Once an Apache campsite, the area became known for copper mining when the Spanish arrived. The town was formed after silver was discovered at Chloride Flat in the 1870s. In 1875, Grant County Sheriff Harvey Whitehill became the first person to arrest William Bonney, who is more commonly known as Billy the Kid. Whitehill actually arrested him twice, both times for theft in Silver City. Bonney's mother is buried in a grave in the town's Memory Lane Cemetery.
