Santa Fe, New Mexico, the seat of Santa Fe County as well as the capital of the state, was founded as La Villa Real de la Santa Fé de San Francisco de Asís, which translates to “The Royal Town of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi.” It was made the capital of the New Spanish colony in 1608, making it the oldest capital city in the United States.
