The town of Mountainair is situated in Torrance County, New Mexico. It was founded in 1903 by Colonel E.C. Manning, John Corbett, and a former U.S. Governor E.S. Stover in anticipation of the trains, which would be passing through on their trips from Belin, New Mexico to Amarillo, Texas in 1907. Mountainair was called the "Pinto Bean Capital of the World" until a drought which lasted from 1946 to 1950. It is now called the "Gateway to the Ancient Cities," and is near various monuments and state and federal parks, which has helped the town to be a tourist attraction. It is also home to the annual Sunflower Festival.
