Las Cruces, which means “The Crosses” in Spanish, is the county seat of Doña Ana County, New Mexico. Nicknamed “The City of the Crosses,” was colonized by the Spanish in 1598, and then fell under New Spain’s control in 1821. It was also claimed by the Republic of Texas, and finally, in 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo gave it over to the United States. The town was founded in 1849.
