The borough of Red Bank, New Jersey is situated in Monmouth County. It is located on the Navesink River and is named after the red soil of the banks of the Navesink. Beginning in the 1600s, Red Bank was settled by British colonists. It grew into a shipbuilding center, and the population grew steadily. After 1809, it grew even faster due to the regularly scheduled passenger ships going to and from Manhattan. By 1844, it had become a manufacturing and commercial center which included furs, tanning, and textiles. Red Bank is where the famous jazz pianist Count Basie was born, and the Count Basie Theatre is named in his honor.
