Newark, New Jersey is the county seat of Essex County. It was founded in 1666 by a group of Puritans from different villages in Connecticut who were led by Robert Treat and Reverend Abraham Pierson. Treat wanted to name the new settlement Milford, while Pierson wanted to name it New Ark, in honor of Noah’s Ark. That won the day, though it was shortened to Newark.
