The borough of Millstone, New Jersey is situated in Somerset County. It was named after the Millstone River which was, in turn, named from an incident during which a millstone was dropped into the river. Before it was called Somerset Courthouse, and it was the county seat of Somerset County until British soldiers fighting the American Revolutionary War burned it to the ground in 1779. General George Washington used a local house, the Van Doren house, as a temporary headquarters after the Continental Army's victory at Princeton in 1777
