Freehold Township, New Jersey is a township in Monmouth County. In 1664, the Duke of York granted a patent to Sir George Carteret and John, Lord Berkely for what was to become the entire state of New Jersey. It was formed in 1693 and was incorporated as a township in 1798. In the early 1770s, war was in the air, and the Sons of Liberty were recruiting members in the area. In 1775, just after the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Captain Elias Longstreet recruited the first company of Freeholders into the Continental Army. In 1778, the Battle of Monmouth, in which General George Washington attacked the rear of the British Army column in what today is Freehold. This was the battle in which Molly Prichard took over the cannon after her husband was wounded.
