The township of Edison, New Jersey, is in Middlesex County on the Jersey Shore. Originally incorporated as Raritan Township in 1870, it was changed in 1954 to honor inventor Thomas Alva Edison, whose main laboratory was in the Menlo Park section of the township. Edison, known commonly by the nickname "the Wizard of Menlo Park," had set up both his home and his lab in Menlo Park and that lab was where he invented such things as the phonograph and the filament for the incandescent light bulb. Christie Street, in Edison, was the first street in the world to use electric lights for illumination.
