Cape May, New Jersey, is in Cape May County and sits at the southern tip of Cape May Peninsula where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It was named in 1620 for Dutch Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey who explored and charted the area, claiming it for the province of New Netherland. It was subsequently settled by New Englanders from the New Haven Colony. Recognized as the country's oldest seaside resort, Cape May was first formed in 1848 as the borough of Cape Island by an act of the state legislature. It was reincorporated as Cape Island City in 1851, and finally as Cape May City in 1869. As of 1976, Cape May is the only city to be designated a National Historic Landmark.
