Bridgewater Township, New Jersey is in Somerset County. Bridgewater Township was created in 1749 by Royal Charter of King George II and incorporated in 1798 using the Township Act of 1798. It gets its name in honor of Bridgewater in the County of Somerset, England. On June 14, 1777, Betsey Ross's flag was officially unfurled in Bridgwater at the Middlebrook Winter Encampment while General George Washington and the Continental Army were bunked down there. It was a farming community until the 1970s when the population began to swell after the 1967 Newark riots and others in the state. Many of those immigrants were in telecommunications, pharmaceutical, and financial industries.
