Bridgeton, New Jersey is located in Cumberland County on the Cohansey River. The first European settlement here began in 1686 when Richard Hancock founded a sawmill. In 1814 , settlers established an iron works. The Township of Bridgeton was officially incorporated in March of 1865. After the Civil War, Bridgeton's agricultural production added to the fact that it was both an educational and commercial center catapulted it to the position of being the most prosperous town in the state of New Jersey.
