The township of Bedminster, New Jersey is situated in Somerset County. It was settled in 1710 by Dutch, Scots-Irish, and German immigrants. A royal charter created Bedminster in 1749, and it was formally incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1798. It was named in honor of Bedminster, England. Bedminster Township is famous for the fact that the Pluckemin Continental Artillery Cantonment, which was the Continental Army's artillery winter cantonment during the winter of 1778-79. It was also the location of the nation's first military artillery training academy, which preceded the United States Military Academy at West Point. That first military academy was the responsibility of General Henry Knox, head of the Continental Army artillery.
