The city of Bayonne, New Jersey is situated in Hudson County. This area, originally inhabited by the American Indians, was originally named Bergen Neck. It was claimed by the Netherlands after Henry Hudson discovered the Hudson Strait and explored the Hudson River while searching for the Northwest Passage. The area was renamed Bayonne in honor of Bayonne, France. It was formed as a township just days before the beginning of the American Civil War on April 1, 1861. In 1869, the township became a city.
