Barnegat Township is situated in Ocean County, New Jersey. In 1946, it was incorporated using parts of Dover Township and Stafford Township in Monmouth County. In 1850, it became part of the newly-formed Ocean County. Between 1871 and 1899, parts of the township were taken to form Lacey Township, Ocean Township, Harvey Cedars, and Long Beach Township, and on January 1, 1977 Union Township changed his name to Barnegat Township. It was named after Barnegat Bay and Barnegat Inlet nearby. The township is the location of the Cedar Bridge Tavern, which was the final skirmish of the American Revolutionary War in 1782. The tavern is the oldest standing, intact bar in the United States, having been there since around 1740.
