The New Hampshire city of Portsmouth is situated in Rockingham County. It was settled by English settlers in 1630 who named it Piscataqua, which was the Abenaki name for the river. It was later renamed Strawberry Banke due to the multitude of wild strawberries on the banks of the river. In 1653, it was incorporated as a town and named Portsmouth in honor of the founder’s captaincy in Portsmouth, England.
