The New Hampshire town of Lee is situated in Strafford County. It was named in honor of General Charles Lee, who started out a British general in the American Revolutionary War but joined the American partway through the Revolution. Originally part of the early Dover township, Lee was settled in 1657. The town includes Wheelwright Pond, a body of water named in honor of the founder of the town of Exeter, Reverend John Wheelwright. Wheelwright Pond is famous as having been the site of one of the early battles in King Wiliam's War on July 4, 1690. In 1738, Durham separated from Dover, and in 1766, Lee separated from Durham.
