The town of Freedom is located in Carroll County, New Hampshire. Originally called "North Effingham," it was part of the town of Effingham. When a large number of new settlers arrived from Maine, in the 1820s, there were numerous conflicts of faith and culture between the and the long-time residents. In 1831, the community broke away and was named Freedom. The children's fantasy book "The Enormous Egg," written by Oliver Butterworth, was set in Freedom. First published in 1956, it was aired on NPR's "This American Life" as "House on Loon Lake." It took place in an abandoned house explored by boys who were there for summer camp.
