The town of Derry, New Hampshire is situated in Rockingham County. Alan B. Shepard, the first man in space, was born and raised in Derry. Originally settled by Scots-Irish families in 1719, it was incorporated in 1827, it was named in honor of Derry, Ireland. Derry is the place where the first potato in the United States was planted in 1814. It was also a farming community and a hub of the leather-making and linen business. American poet Robert Frost lived in Derry on a farm from 1900 to 1911. That farm is now a National Historic Landmark and state park.
